Venus meets Jupiter on the longest day of the year - June 30!!

IRISH ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIATION: MEDIA RELEASE.
 
1. VERY close conjunction of Venus and Jupiter.
2. An extra 'Leap Second' will be added on June 30.
 
1. THE TWO BRIGHTEST 'STARS' IN THE SKY WILL COME TOGETHER ON TUESDAY EVENING.
 Venus the brilliant "Evening Star", has been shining gloriously in the evening twilight for the past few months. Although it's a planet, it's so far away that it looks just like a star to the naked eye, and in fact the Ancient Greeks called the planets 'wandering stars'. It's by far the brightest starlike object in the night sky.
   The second brightest 'star' is the giant planet Jupiter, and their orbits have gradually been bringing Venus and Jupiter ever closer together as we see them from Earth.
Although it is so big that it could contain 1,000 planet Earths, it is so far away that it also appears like a point of light - bright, but not as bright as Venus which is much closer.
   On Tuesday evening Jupiter and Venus will appear much less than a Moon diameter apart - only 1/3 of a degree! In a telescope, you would be able to see them easily in the same field of view! You will need a clear horizon to the west, as they will be quite low down. Look low in the W twilight about 10.45 pm, and you'll easily see Venus. If you have binoculars you should just be able to spot fainter Jupiter just above and slightly to the left of Venus, but if just using your eyes, you may need to wait until about 11 p.m. or a little later before the sky gets dark enough to see Jupiter.
   Even though they appear so close together, actually Venus is a 'mere' 48 million miles away, whereas Jupiter is 565 million miles away: they just happen to lie in the same line of sight.
   From 1 July on they will gradually appear to separate, and sink lower in the evening twilight.
 
2. AN EXTRA SECOND WILL BE ADDED TO 30 JUNE, making it the longest day of the whole year. The time we use in our clocks, watches, computers, satnav etc is absolutely constant: it's called UTC (Universal Time, Co-ordinated), or informally 'International Atomic Time'. And we now measure that time more accurately than the daily spin of Planet Earth, which used to be taken as constant, giving us our 24h day.
   But actually, the Earth's rotation speed is NOT constant, and it varies very slightly, at the moment it is VERY slowly slowing down, for a number of reasons. So in order to keep clock time in synch with the daily time given by the spin of the Earth, an extra second is added when needed, either at the end of June, or the end of December. So the world's official clocks, which would usually read 23h 59m 59s to 00h 00m 00s will instead read 23h 59m 59s, 23h 59m 60s, 00h 00m 00s.
     The main factors which slow down the Earth's spin are climate variations, melting polar ice, El Nino effects, tectonic movements and changes in ocean currents.
   This will be the 4th leap second added since the year 2000.
 
NOTES TO EDITORS:
1. Officially, a day is exactly 86,400 seconds long. But in practice, for the last few decades at least, it has been about 86,400.002 seconds long. The extra 2 thousands of a second may not seem much, but cumulatively the difference adds up, and when the clocks are out of step by almost a second, the adjustment is made.
2. UTC is measured by the very regular electromagnetic transitions in Cesium atoms. These give an accuracy of 1 second in 1,400,000 years!
3.  Some have expressed concern that inbuilt computer clocks which read UTC will have some sort of a 'hiccup' at this time: it is unlikely, but if anyone is concerned you might want to make sure your computer is off at the time.

Lecture tonite, IAA BBQ at A/Obs; Venus & Jup, Asteroid Day, Leap sec, ISS video

1. Prof Monica Grady, CBE: Lecture in QUB, Belfast, "Are Comets the Givers and Takers of Life?", Fri 26 June, 7.00
Professor of Planetary and Space Science at the Open University, Monica Grady was part of the science team at mission control when the landing of the Rosetta space probe occurred. In her talk she will introduce the topic of comets and explain why some people think they may have led to life on Earth and possibly its destruction through mass extinctions. She will also give a personal account of the Rosetta Mission, her involvement in it, and report on some of its latest results.

3. Venus - Jupiter Conjunction, 30 June: Watch the two brightest planets in the sky gradually come together this month until they have a close conjunction on June 30. By June 29th they will be only 45' apart. closest approach for us will be just before they set on the evening of the 30th when Venus will be just 21' below Jupiter - that's only 2/3 of a Moon diameter, so they can easily be seen in the same telescopic field of view. Before they get too low it should be possible to get an image showing both the phase of Venus, the disc of Jupiter, and its 4 Galilean Moons.
But unlike a statement in one astronomy society's report, they will NOT appear to merge! And as for this - http://www.aol.co.uk/2015/06/15/skygazers-set-to-see-jupiter-and-venus-collide/ - What an appalling headline!
Next evening they will be 30' apart, and the separation will continue to increase until Jupiter disappears in the twilight in mid-July.

14. COSMIC LIGHT, IYL2015

Cosmic Light EDU kit

A. The Cosmic Light EDU kit has been launched! The main goal for this project is to involve schools around the globe in awareness campaigns for light pollution and to discover the nature of light. The project has assembled an educational kit, with simple resources and activities to support teachers. There are many and varied networks involved in this project so participants can benefit from many opportunities for a rich cultural interchange. The project aims to target diverse social and cultural audiences, and there is a special component designed for children with visual impairment incorporated in the kit to promote inclusivity. The kit will have printable materials, several digital tools and resources and training efforts will be implemented in order to empower teachers to make full use of the kit The campaign will reach teachers and students in 100 countries around the world.

B. Cosmic Light IYL2015: Dark Sky Meter app

The IAU Cosmic Light programme has just released the Dark Sky Meter (DSM) app for iPhones free of charge! All you have to do is point your phone at the night sky, and it measures the night sky brightness for you. Then, you can use the IYL DSM app to submit your measurement easily. All measurements will be entered into the Globe at Night database and be used by researchers.

NASA WANTS YOU TO NAME FEATURES ON PLUTO When NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flies by Pluto on 14 July, the spacecraft's high-resolution cameras will spot many new landforms on the dwarf planet's unexplored surface. 1: Aurora tonight? The ongoing solar powered geomagnetic storm means that there's a chance of more auroral activity over Ireland tonight. Unfortunately the 'dark(ish) sky window' is very short at this time of year, but a bright aurora can be seen even in twilight. I looked last night, but it was cloudy, however some areas had clear sky and saw some activity. 6. 26 June: Launch of Falcon 9 (Space X CRS 7) to International Space Station. The latest resupply mission for the International Space Station (ISS) is scheduled for 26 June, when a Dragon cargo spacecraft will launch atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The mission, run by the SpaceX corporation, will deliver an adaptor to enable future spacecraft to dock more easily with the Station. After a number of launch failures, many Russian rockets are grounded, so the SpaceX system is an important route for supplies to reach the ISS and its crew. http://www.spacex.com/

The project has assembled an educational kit, with simple resources and activities to support teachers. There are many and varied networks involved in this project so participants can benefit from many opportunities for a rich cultural interchange. The project aims to target diverse social and cultural audiences, and there is a special component designed for children with visual impairment incorporated in the kit to promote inclusivity. The kit will have printable materials, several digital tools and resources and training efforts will be implemented in order to empower teachers to make full use of the kit The campaign will reach teachers and students in 100 countries around the world.

B. Cosmic Light IYL2015: Dark Sky Meter app

The IAU Cosmic Light programme has just released the Dark Sky Meter (DSM) app for iPhones free of charge! All you have to do is point your phone at the night sky, and it measures the night sky brightness for you. Then, you can use the IYL DSM app to submit your measurement easily. All measurements will be entered into the Globe at Night database and be used by researchers.

NASA WANTS YOU TO NAME FEATURES ON PLUTO When NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flies by Pluto on 14 July, the spacecraft's high-resolution cameras will spot many new landforms on the dwarf planet's unexplored surface.
